Susan Ashcom brings her experience as an attorney, IT professional, and most recently, world history teacher in Washington, DC’s charter schools, to support the mission of the Bokamoso Youth Foundation board.
Susan was drawn to Bokamoso because it provides invaluable educational and career opportunities to South African youth, while increasing the cultural awareness of young people on both sides of the Atlantic through cultural exchange. As the African proverb says, “[t]he stranger only sees what he knows.”
The mother of three young adults, Susan grew up on a farm near Charlottesville, Virginia, and went on to earn a BA in history from UNC Chapel Hill and a JD from the University of Pittsburgh. Her first overseas trip was to the USSR. Visiting a nation so very different from her own kicked off a life-long appreciation for different cultures, places, and peoples.
